The Shopkeeper and Poor Me..! [Ferrari Watches]

The Baniya shopkeeper of the small kirana store at the corner of the road, who sat at his counter didn't even bother looking at me as I entered his shop, he was busy taking out sticky, unwrapped sweets from a jar with fingers which I knew had just been used to dig his nose. "Excuse me!" I said as the shopkeeper studiously ignored me and counted eight sweets, which he gave to a little child. "Did you give me a dozen sweets uncle?" asked the child. "Yes," said the shopkeeper, "Twelve!" The child put one in his mouth and walked out.
"You gave him only eight!" I said angrily.
"What to do," said the shopkeeper as he weighed the one kilo sugar I wanted, "What to do, things are so expensive there is no other way I can make a profit."
"Are you sure your weighing scales are correct?" I asked as I picked up a kilo packet of washing powder and put it in place of his kilo measure. I watched as the scales now tipped in my favour, "Your scales are wrong!" I said.
"What to do, things are so expensive, there is no other way!" said the shopkeeper with a smile.
"There is!" I said.
"Is there?" he asked not bothering to look up.
"If we can get good retail shopping centres that sold clean hygienic products, where scales were correctly balanced, products were fresh, even cheaper, where the poor farmer would be given a fair price and where his produce was not be wasted in transportation because of good cold storage facilities then it would solve the problem."
"That will never happen," said the shopkeeper happily.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because we won't allow it," said the baniya shopkeeper with finality.
"But I the consumer am being deprived of my right to good, cheap and fresh products!" I cried.
"And I the shopkeeper will be deprived of my profits if this happens!" said the shopkeeper gleefully.
"But I am the voter!"
"Maybe," said the shopkeeper, "but my voice is heard more than yours. Look at the BJP, watch how they disrupt Parliament, all, so that you continue coming to my shop.."
"Where you cheat people!"
"Watch the commies, watch Mamata who speaks for the poor, everyone of them, in our pockets!"
I watched the baniya shopkeeper again taking out sticky, unwrapped sweets from a jar with fingers I knew had just been used to dig his nose, counting seven sweets, this time, which he gave to another little child. "Did you give me a dozen sweets uncle?" asked the child innocently as the shopkeeper smiled, then guffawed and laughed as the opposition parties, the commies and Mamata joined in with him.
It is a happy shopkeeper and a sadder, poorer me, who watches FDI in Retail being thrown out of the country..!

Movado 3Q net income dips, revenue climbs [Ferrari Watches]

Movado Group Inc.'s net income slipped 4 percent in the third quarter as

the prior-year period had a one-time benefit. But revenue climbed on

strong sales of its high-end watches, and the company boosted its full-

year adjusted earnings outlook.

Its stock gained $1.57, or 10 percent, to $17.30 in premarket trading.

Movado reported Thursday that it earned $16.4 million, or 65 cents per

share, for the three months ended Oct. 31. That compares with earnings of

$17.1 million, or 69 cents per share, a year earlier.

The year-ago period included a one-time benefit of 17 cents per share

related to the reversal of a previously recorded liability related to a

retirement agreement with former Movado Chairman Gedalio Grinberg, who

died in 2009. Excluding that gain, earnings were 52 cents per share in the

prior-year period.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of 47 cents per share for the

August-October quarter.

Revenue rose 16 percent to $142.6 million from $123 million, helped by

higher sales of Movado watches and its licensed watch brands such as

Coach, Tommy Hilfiger and Juicy Couture.

The Paramus, N.J., company said that its strong third quarter prompted it

to increase its fiscal 2012 adjusted earnings to a range of 93 cents to 98

cents per share. Its prior guidance called for adjusted earnings between

60 cents and 65 cents per share.

Seven tech treats for Christmas [Ferrari Watches]

You have to wonder how far our society has fallen when a pushy consumer resorts to assaulting her fellow shoppers with pepper spray in order get her hands on a discounted Xbox console, which is what happened in a Wal-Mart store in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Yes, it's Christmas shopping season again, and while Australians don't generally carry around pepper spray, we do love our gadgets.

With that in mind, we've put together a Christmas shopping list for the tech-savvy business traveller. Here's seven things we'd almost use pepper spray to get our hands on.

1. iPad keyboard case

The gadget that many thought would become the “third device” behind the smartphone and the laptop has become ubiquitous for millions of executives.

When combined with a wireless keyboard, the iPad is becoming a true laptop replacement, transforming the lives of mobile workers.

There's a growing number of devices that combine a case for your iPad with a keyboard, but those on offer from ZAGG are worth getting excited about.

The ZAGGfolio comes in 11 colours, with three keyboard options. At around $130 you'd want to be committed to the idea of turning your iPad into your main travel PC, but you'll also be getting highly durable protection for your tablet which could save you a lot more the next time you drop it.

2. Lytro camera

The Lytro light field camera allows you to point and shoot at anything, and then focus the image later on your PC.

No-one seems to know how this camera actually works, other than its ability to capture more light, but you have to admit being able to adjust the focus of the picture you take after you take it, using just the camera, is a novel concept.

For $US399 you can join the other guinea pigs that will be experimenting with this new form of photography and get a camera that fits in your pocket.

3. Telstra 4G (LTE) dongle

If you travel a lot and speed matters in your line of business, then you've probably already got your hands on Telstra's 4G offering which delivers download speeds of up to 41 megabits per second.

While not truly 4G as it doesn't reach speeds anywhere near the LTE-A standard of 1 gigabit per second, Technology Spectator reviewer Nerav Bhatt says it offers a significant potential speed increase compared to the sometimes congested Telstra NextG 3G network, and is the best mobile broadband solution for workers with time pressure.

The dongle costs $299 outright for Telstra business customers or is included in the cost of a monthly plan eg: $49/8GB or $39/8GB if bundled.

4. Jawbone UP

Anyone that travels regularly for work knows one of the biggest challenges is maintaining your sleep, diet and exercise routine, all of which can impact performance.

The Jawbone UP is a wristband that tracks all of those things and syncs to your iPhone to help analyse activity and set up regular reminders.

With all that tracking set up, you'll be inspired to live healthier, and it also has a smart alarm feature designed to help wake you up at the optimal time (by monitoring your movements during sleep) so you feel more refreshed during the day.

At $US99.99 the Jawbone website says they're currently on backorder, proving they must be popular with more than just the geeks.

5. iPod nano watch

When Apple first announced its new iPod nano with watch faces many saw it as a cheap gimmick. But it didn't take long for smart designers to start building a range of wristbands designed to turn the nano into a functional and stylish watch.

One of those designers, who's product features at Apple's last launch, is Scott Wilson, who used to be creative director for Nike Watches. Wilson managed to raise nearly $US1 million on crowdfunding site Kickstarter.com to make his idea for a watch that fitted Apple's design ethos a reality.

Combine the new iPod nano with Lunatik's latest band – the Lynk, and you've got a sleek looking wristwatch that will help ensure you never miss a meeting. You'll have to be keen for the bragging rights however, as the nano will set you back $149 and the wristband another $US129.95.

6. Kobo Touch eInk eReader

In all the tablet hype it's often easy to overlook eBook readers, but as Technology Spectator reviewer Neerav Bhatt explains, they're doing a great job stealing paper and hardback book market share.

If you're serious about reading work-related books while on the move, then you'll need a dedicated book reader with a non-reflective eInk screen which doesn't cause eye strain, can be read in even the brightest sunlight and allows font style or size to be changed.

The Kobo Touch eReader is one such device, and at less than $140 from Collins Booksellers it's one tablet you can unashamedly add to your Christmas wish list for the family.

7. SHOWWX+ Laser Pico Projector

Micro projectors that can be plugged into your phone have been around for a while, but many have had issues with brightness, resolution and image size.

Offering images of up to 250 centimetres, the SHOWWX+ laser pico projector is almost getting to home theatre proportions. It also works with multiple devices, including iPads.

If you spend a lot of time on the road presenting and want something more impressive than your iPad, this device will set you back around $180.

HAUTE LIVING MAGAZINE [Ferrari Watches]

Luxury Swiss watch manufacturer Hublot partnered with a new ambassador and

living legend Usain Bolt to celebrate the opening of their Beverly Hills

Boutique with a rather unique event.

The luxury timepiece atelier and the fastest man in the world came

together for the Hublot Race Challenge. Taking place at the Greystone

Mansion and hosted by sports personality Neil Everett, the race raised

$10,000 for every child that finished the race before the Jamaican sprint

star.

Not only the reigning running of the 200-meter dash, Bolt is also widely

involved in philanthropy, namely STAR Education, a non profit that focuses

on educational after school programs. The event was not only to raise

money for these cultural projects and after school programs, but also to

raise awareness about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, eating and

physical activity.

A new program, the Hublot and STAR "Games," was also announced at the

race, another collaboration between the Swiss timepiece maker and Bolt.

"For Hublot, it is hugely symbolic for watchmaker to see his watch worn

by the fastest man in the world," said Hublot Managing Director Ricardo

Guadalupe. "Like Hublot, Usain has set himself apart from the rest of the

world through his unique abilities. But on this day, we seek to unite the

community in a common principle of sharing."

After the event, a special evening took place at the recently opened Mr.

C's, where watch aficionados were able to view the latest collection of

Hublot timepieces. Bolt even put on a surprise DJ performance. Now that's

what we call a Renaissance man.

Elle’s Accessories Editor Boldly Divulges His Weekend Spending [Ferrari Watches]

Now's a tricky time to talk about money, which makes it all the more interesting when someone is willing to do so in detail and in a public forum like this here Internet. Daily Front Row's latest spending diary chronicles all the money Elle accessories editor Kyle Anderson spent over the weekend. Like every New Yorker, there are the trivial indulgences, like the $3.35 morning Starbucks order: "My usual order at Starbucks is a tall iced coffee with one Splenda and skim milk. Every intern in the history of Elle for the past six years knows this ... But in the autumn, I like an iced chai latte."

There are the $250 beauty treatments from Dr. Perricone: "I used to go tanning back in the high school days, 365 days a year. I was black slash glow-in-the-dark for most of the nineties." And the requisite splurge, Anderson's being a $12,956.13 watch from Hublot, which sounds like it was a gift for someone special: "It’s a watch with all of the words of the Declaration of Independence inside it. It’s perfect since my boyfriend just got his green card." And before dinner at the Standard, there's the personal booze shopping, which was a $630 champagne-and-flute set from Astor Wines. Also, the taxis, more coffee, magazines, Sunday night desserts. What New York expense did he miss? Yoga class? A flea market find? Drinks for other people purchased in a state of selfless drunkenness? Seems like he covered most of his bases, even without those things.

Jackson's collectible car wows crowds [Ferrari Watches]

The real Chitty Chitty Bang Bang had the crowds queuing for a chance to take a spin in Sir Peter Jackson's collectible car during the Vintage Aviators Remembrance Day Air Show in Masterton.

The movie mogul bought it at auction in May for $987,000.

He lent the rare "flying" Ford car, made famous by the 1968 movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, for the event at Hood Aerodrome on Saturday. Children paid a gold coin for a ride – on land.

Organiser Sara Randle said there were queues "from the moment it started till when we actually had to stop it".

A spokesman for Sir Peter confirmed last month that he had bought Chitty Chitty Bang Bang after he was spotted driving it around Seatoun with his children.

In the British musical, starring Dick Van Dyke and based on the only children's book written by James Bond creator, Ian Fleming, the car acquires magical powers, enabling it to float in the ocean and fly.

Sir Peter, a part-time Masterton resident, bought the car with the intention of taking it to the airshow, now in its eighth year, to raise money for charity. More than $1000 was raised for the Wairarapa Women's Refuge in two hours.

Two thousand people braved abysmal weather conditions to watch rare World War I aircraft take to the sky, including one owned by Sir Peter. The aircraft are all locally owned and include original and replica flying machines from the early 20th century.

Ladies' Watches - Fashion Meets Function [Ferrari Watches]

Historically, ladies' Watches have posed the greater challenge to watch makers, partly in finding a design that appeals to women, and partly in manufacturing a watch that would not overwhelm a woman's wrist. For women who prefer a chunky, functional sports watch, this is not such a problem, but when designing Watches to be worn as fashion items as well as timekeepers, many complications had to be surrendered to reduce the space that the movement took up.

This could be why, for the most part, ladies' Watches over the years have developed into clean, simple designs that focus on the elegance that a watch can possess as it sits on a wrist. While men's watches developed variations and additions to chronograph functions, the features of a ladies watch remained much the same. Changes were instead made to the shape of the dial and case, and to colours for the wrist strap and dial itself.

Ladies' fashion watches come in two types. There are the delicate watches produced by fashion houses themselves, which often have quartz mechanisms to allow for the small dials that they usually have. Expensive case materials and luxurious straps accent diamonds placed in the dial and the case itself. Fashion houses such as Gucci and Christian Dior sell watches like this to accompany bags, clothing, and even perfume.
Ladies' Watches - Fashion Meets Function

The other type of ladies' fashion watch is that made by a watch house, which contains a mechanical movement. These watches are usually slightly smaller than the men's ranges to account for women's more delicate wrist. Size is dictated to a certain degree by the movement placed inside the watch, and so the biggest difference between a men's watch and a ladies watch will often be the materials and dial.

For example, Rolex's ladies' watches often have diamonds embedded in the case surrounding the dial, which can turn an ordinary-looking watch into something fit to be worn at the most prestigious of occasions. Cartier watches have a fine balance between simplicity and extravagance. Although diamonds are often seen as the symbol of luxury, many Cartier watches have few or no diamonds at all. Instead, the square dial in a gold or white gold case shows tasteful refinement, and is instantly recognisable as the brand it is.

Jewellery watches, as may be gathered from the name, are like a bracelet that can tell the time; something to be proudly displayed at parties. They are usually encrusted with diamonds, a dress watch to be worn on special occasions only. Jewellery watches are now often described as 'bling' watches, as their great cost makes them a statement of wealth as much as taste.

Making a ladies' watch has often been considered a challenge, but as watch movements have developed and become smaller over time, this challenge has eased somewhat.
